Ramadan Refresh the ‘Hood Challenge 2012: IMAN & the Lupe Fiasco Foundation

IMAN is partnering with the Lupe Fiasco Foundation on the Ramadan Refresh the ‘Hood Challenge, a month-long effort to engage with community residents and to transform local corner stores into sites for education around health and wellness. This effort will bring subsidized fresh produce to two out of the 15  local corner stores that have signed on to IMAN’s Muslim Run Statement of Intent transformation document. Our two partner stores,  will open their doors, every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, to this challenge to use the sacred goodness of this month to step up their commitment to a larger campaign dealing with  race relations and access to fresh and wholesome food in the inner city.

The Ramadan Refresh the Hood Challenge emerges from IMAN’s Muslim Run: A Campaign for Health, Wellness, and Healing that confronts the intersections between community health and local corner stores and calls on corner store owners to be accountable to the communities they serve. Ramadan is the ideal month for the Muslim community to challenge themselves and one another to be more accountable for spiritual imperatives to act in accordance with the highest ideals of justice, compassion and mercy in the world.

Ramadan Reflections & Friday Khutba with Ubaidullah Evans

These Reflections, held every Wednesday during Ramadan from 6 to 8 PM, are becoming a beloved Ramadan tradition at IMAN.  IMAN’s Scholar-in-Residence, Ubaidullah Evans, will be leading an interactive class and discussion on the spiritual & social justice dimensions of this blessed month.  Each class will be followed immediately by a healthy iftar–breaking of the fast–supplied by a local purveyor of healthy foods.  Please plan on joining us every Wednesday, especially if you live in the Chicaogland area.

Ubaidullah Evans has just recently finished his studies at the famed Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt.  IMAN is proud to have been a part of his extraordinary journey of scholarship and engagement with the community, a journey we hope is just getting started. Congratulations, Ubaidullah!

Evans, will also be delivering the khutbah– leading jum’ah every Friday during Ramadan at 1 PM.  Please join us for what we hope will be a spiritually inspiring and socially relevant discourse every Friday..

IMAN Welcomes Ramadan

We would like to extend another Blessed Ramadan to you all.  For the staff and leadership of IMAN, Ramadan is also a time to renew our commitment to serve, inspire and change inner-city neighborhoods in Chicago and beyond.  We are reminded, more than ever in this month, of the Prophetic compassion that inspires us to be a force for good and a source of inspiration for one another, as we strive to connect with the Most High through all we do.

This year IMAN will be taking our activities and outreach during Ramadan to the next level, and as IMAN begins the year-long process of commemorating 15 years of dedication and work, we will be hosting many activities and events that engage community members and build community in Ramadan’s spirit of renewal and transformation. Please return to our site, twitter account and Facebook page to stay connected with the work and opportunities over the next four weeks.

Health Clinic: Ready for Ramadan

During the month of Ramadan, IMAN’s Health Clinic will reach a key milestone of treating one hundred patients per week, God Willing.   This represents our commitment to continue increasing our capacity for delivering health care services to our local community, which has a great need for such services.  While expanding Clinic hours is an obvious precursor to this increased capacity, it has also required growing the number of volunteer physicians and Clinic volunteer staff, and streamlining the electronic medical records system and other technical infrastructure that the Clinic runs on.

A new medical billing system will, also, go into production in Ramadan.  Over the last few months, we have been working with several providers to implement this new system for the Clinic, in order to facilitate a more efficient operation.  This, in turn, once again, will allow us to continue to expand the delivery of our services.
