IMAN recognized in the latest issue of Islamica magazine.

It’s 6 a.m. and a chartered bus waits outside the office of the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN). A troupe of sleepy-eyed Chicagoans spanning all ages and ethnicities file onto the bus and are welcomed by an energetic voice. The journey is to Springfield, Illinois. The reason: alternative sentencing for low-level, nonviolent drug offenders. It is part of a greater effort led by IMAN to make activism and the plight of America’s poor a natural concern of American Muslims.

IMAN Opens Free Clinic On 63rd St.

The Inner-City Muslim Action Network recently opened a free weekly clinic in its new headquarters at 2744 W. 63rd St. Officials of IMAN, a community organization that recently relocated from 3344 W. 63rd St., showed representatives of several local organizations around the new clinic last Thursday following an informational session at which the general state of health care in the United States was discussed.

Cross-Cultural Hip-Hop at Community Café

Community Café is an event that celebrates hip-hop about Islam, and hopes to spur dialogue about political and social issues. Independent producer Monique Parsons reports. The next event will be held on December 29 at the Spoken Word Café.

SMART ACT Passes Senate Unanimously

Over the past two years IMAN has been working, in a leadership capacity, as a part of the Developing Justice Coalition (DJC) to enact The SMART Act--an acronym for Substance Abuse Management Addressing Recidivism through Treatment, into law.

May 8th-Project Restore Trip to Springfield

Join IMAN’s Project Restore as apart of the Development Justice Coalition, DJC, in Springfield, Illinois on Tuesday May 8th to advocate for the SMART Act, a bill that will allow judges to divert low-level drug offenders into county "drug schools." We are, God willing, on the verge of a victory and this is something that the Muslim need to be apart of. The Act--an acronym for Substance Abuse Management Addressing Recidivism through Treatment--received tremendous support at statewide hearings held in late 2006.

IMAN invited to give the invocation on the senate floor

IMAN was invited to give the invocation on the senate floor on 3/22/2007. IMAN is the 3rd group of Muslims given the opportunity to provide the invocation when the Senate convenes. Nia Hassasan, IMAN's policy advisor, facilitated the opportunity.

Board Chair Broadens IMAN's Horizons

In Four years ago New York Professor Amir Al-Islam was invited to join the ranks at IMAN. An academic, social activist and interfaith leader, Al-Islam appeared to be a perfect fit for the rapidly expanding Chicago-based organization, despite the glaring fact that he didn't live in Chicago.

Excitement Grows as IMAN Opens Pilot Transitional Housing

In 1997, Rafi Peterson was released from prison with nothing more than his faith in Allah and his desire to survive. Ten years later, as the Coordinator of IMAN’s Project Restore, Peterson is eager to open the doors to IMAN’s first transitional housing facility, making it easier for recently released Muslims to re-enter into society.

Rabbinical Student Fellow Placement at IMAN - Summer, 2006

This summer, Adam Stein was the first Rabbinical Student Intern at IMAN. His Tuesday/Thursday placement at IMAN was a part of the Rabbinical Student Summer Fellowship at the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, a 40-year-old Chicago organization that works to combat poverty and racism in the inner city. IMAN and JCUA have found that they have similar missions and goals around working for social justice and have increasingly collaborated; this fellowship placement is the latest development in a growing relationship. Below are some of Adam’s reflections on his experience:

The Movement Continues: Wednesday July 19th Mass March & IMAN’s Ongoing Vision of Muslim Participation

On Wednesday July 19th, IMAN’s Immigrant Rights Committee (IRC) once again mobilized to attend a mass rally in solidarity with the larger Latino and immigrant community calling for a moratorium on mass deportations until a comprehensive immigration reform bill is passed. A charter bus left from IMAN’s new Health Center and Administrative Office at 2744 W. 63rd Street on Wednesday morning, where members from the Southwest Youth Collaborative, AAAN and SWOP joined IMAN for march.
