Kauthar Umar – Communications Director

Kauthar Umar is a magazine editor, photographer and documentary film producer with a B.A. in Communications/Journalism from Russell Sage College and an M.A. from The American University in International Journalism and Public Affairs.

She has written for ESSENCE and ym magazines, and serves as a contributing editor for Germany's Deutschland International and ISNA's Islamic Horizons magazine, where she also developed and edited the historic issue, Return To Roots in 2005.

She’s served as a journalist for the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, a Project Director for The Coore Foundation and worked as the Public Relations and Media Editor for the Dudley Observatory. Kauthar was among the sixteen winning producers chosen for the National Black Programming Consortium’s, “NBPC New Media Institute 2006” and is currently co-producing, New Muslim Cool a feature length film for PBS.
