Organizing & Advocacy

IMAN has effectively organized a larger Chicago-land Muslim community around several issues directly affecting working families living in the inner city.  Comprehensive immigration reform, criminal justice, and education organizing are some of the focus issues of IMAN’s organizing work.

IMAN is able to mobilize community members and leaders around these issues of social justice and through events such as Takin’ It to the Streets, a community festival which brings together thousands of people to Marquette Park in the Southwest side of Chicago.  While staying grounded in the community, IMAN has been able to affect statewide legislation through its organizing efforts and the formation of the Developing Justice Coalition, a statewide alliance of social service and religious organizations advocating for the reform of criminal justice.  IMAN is also a founding member of the United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations, through which it seeks to create a multiracial and multicultural alliance for advocating human rights and social justice
