He and his customers seem to trust each other. “Look at my counter,” he said, gesturing toward the cash register, which, unlike some in the neighborhood, isn’t behind a plastic partition. “I’m open.” His efforts were fortified when the Inner-City Muslim Action Network asked him to be part of its campaign for better corner stores.
