Empowering Communities for Public Safety: #ThePeoplesOrdinance
As a nation, we continue to be rocked by stories of police brutality in our streets. Even as we see symbolic strides being made, we know that this issue requires far more than a pancake syrup name change, Juneteenth Federal Holiday, or the outcome of an individual trial. We know that we must create systems of accountability for police officers and continue to build the relationships that empower communities and keep us safe.
Since the murder of Laquan McDonald at the hands of the Chicago Police Department in 2014, IMAN has particpated in countless community conversations and actively strategized with other stakeholders to ensure police misconduct was no longer ignored. IMAN continues to work tirelessly to pass meaningful legislation alongside organizations and leaders citywide who have been most directly affected by police brutality. After years of organizing, the people of Chicago have unified over a single ordinance called “Empowering Communities for Public Safety” (ECPS). The ECPS ordinance will fundamentally transform policing and public safety in Chicago by creating civilian bodies with powers beyond just the current advisory role existing bodies possess.
