Support the Path to Restoration Bill
Bill Sponsors: State Senators Kimberly Lightford, Elgie Sims, Jackie Collins, Patricia Van Pelt and Don Harmon
#FightFearBuildPower — SB 3489 has passed out of the Criminal Law Committee by a 7-2 margin!
The “Path to Restoration” Bill proposes a set of amendments to Illinois’ registry tracking individuals convicted of certain violent crimes. SB 3489 will create a fairer, more transparent system, allowing individuals to amend incorrect information and appeal their inclusion in the database. This is an opportunity to reconcile returning citizens with victims and their families and to help restore the dignity stripped from so many in this process.
Two actions you can take to continue urging state legislators to support Illinois citizens traversing the Path to Restoration:
Please call the following Senators urging them to vote YES to pass SB 3489 through committee for a full vote in the Illinois Senate:
“Hello, my name is ________ and I am calling to ask Senator _______ to support Senate Bill 3489.
SB 3489 amends the Illinois Murderer and Violence Against Youth Registration Act by allowing certain individuals to petition for early removal and challenge the accuracy of some of the information on the database. SB 3489 will create a just and balanced approach towards community safety, and will aid in the removing of barriers for returning citizens. I ask that Senator ______ votes YES on SB 3489.”
Please take a moment to fill out the witness slip and make calls! SB 3489 will impact thousands of returning citizens and their families across the state of Illinois by easing some of the barriers returning citizens face when coming home.
