The Corner Store Campaign: Striving for Food and Racial Justice
Next City: At Chicago’s Immigrant-Run Corner Stores, Striving for Food and Racial Justice
The Corner Store Campaign is an IMAN-led effort to address the long history of injurious business practices, ingrained racial tensions, and unhealthy food options that typifies many inner-city corner stores. Recently, Arionne Nettles with Next City met with our staff and leaders working in the community for food and racial justice.
“This issue [of food insecurity] affects us all as most people tend to live near a corner store,” Butler says. “People should want to have access to fresh fruit and vegetables, particularly if they live in a food desert. So we should want to have less loitering and have more healthy alternatives in our corner stores.” -Patrice Butler
